Anonymous Donation of Arboretum to University of Texas in Austin

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Recent news at the University of Texas, Austin is that $1.4 million was donated from the San Antonio Area Foundation’s anonymous fund to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for an arboretum which will be a place to present trees from Texas.  This will give the Center the opportunity to “develop some of its most scenic acreage into an outdoor museum of Texas’ natural heritage and cultural history.”  It will be known as the Mollie Steves Zachry Texas Arboretum, since the donation was from Mrs. Zachry.  “Mrs. Zachry’s generosity will allow us to celebrate the magnificent trees of Texas in a setting where our visitors can relax and find inspiration,” said Susan Rieff, executive director of the Wildflower Center. “This gift honors Mrs. Zachry’s long dedication to conservation and her commitment to Lady Bird Johnson’s environmental mission.”  Reagan Silber earned both undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas, Austin, with honors.
